Youth - Meaghan Wheeler
I am a third year Nursing student at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. Although I am in school to be a nurse, it crosses my mind everyday if I should change my direction and become a camp director. I grew up in Dorchester Ontario, a small town about 2.5hrs from the Windsor-Detroit border. I started going to summer camp (Pearce Williams Christian Centre) the summer before grade six. I instantly fell in love with camp, and knew that when I was older I wanted to work there. After being a camper, LIT and CIT, I have now worked at Pearce Williams for the past 7 summers.
In the past, I have held the roles of counsellor, programmer, integration coordinator and program director. This summer will be my 2nd summer as Summer Director at Pearce Williams. During the school year I work hard on interviewing staff, and doing planning for staff training. In the summer, I enjoy spreading my love for summer camp to our staff and every camper who walks to grass of PWCC. For the past three years I have stayed busy during the school year on the Nursing student council. I also do respite work through the VON (Victoria Order of Nurses) with a young girl who has Down's Syndrome. I have been working with her since I was in the 10th grade.
This summer I look forward to using the knowledge that I have gained over the past two years at Buckeye to train my awesome staff. I feel confident with all that BLW has taught me and I know can use that knowledge and wisdom to teach someone else. The sessions at Buckeye, and all the programs offered have a wide variety of things for all the different people who attend. Whether you are in 4-H, from a summer camp in rural South Western Ontario, or just someone who is able to learn and find joy in all that BLW offers, it is a truly magical experience. I cannot wait to see YOU at BLW in March 2011.
